"Marty Wallace" wrote in message . com.au...

I read somewhere once that Campag hubs were more susceptible to broken hubs
than Shimano because of the bearing placement inside the hubs. Consequently
the Campag hubs are built heavier to compensate for this weakness. I did
look at the weights of hubs and the Shimano ones were lighter than the
Campags (this only applies to the rear hubs of course.) Shimano wouldn't let
Campag use the better design. I don't know if this situation is still valid,
I read it about two years ago, maybe on Sheldons site.

The Campy cassette ones use a cartridge bearing (two in the high-zoot
models) to transfer load to the freehub body, which is an enormous
improvement over the old freewheel versions, which just had a couple
of inches of axle sticking out the side, but isn't as good as the
Shimano way, with the outboard right-hand ball-race.

The newer Campy high end hubs (2001? onward) use an oversized
aluminium axle, so they're super light (aluminium) and tough as nails
(oversize) and don't breach the Shimano patent. I've got a pair in my
race wheels. They're pretty good stuff.

Suzy

Does that offer still stand Dutch? Just got a call from LBS to say cups
are cracked too and recommend new wheel. If I need to buy a new wheel
($60) I may well just go to KMart or Rays and get a new bike for $250.
Mmmmmm two new bikes in one week, am I really that extravagent??

More?? I wish. Actually running 5 speed. I've got a casette remover if
you don't. Can I drop by Sat or Sun arvo, unless you're planning on
coming past Bulleen at any time.

If you want me to come over drop me some details on email at above
address, just remove NOSPAMMO.

Well, on the topic of %$#@$ commuting, I turned my MTB into a three
speed today by accident - and i mean that literally...

Buzzing across the Yarra at Bridge Rd end to have some poor girl in the
Laser in front decide to be spontaneous and nice and pick up her friend
at the tram stop outside Dick Smith. Unfortunately, she didn't see me
on her tail and about to enter the bike lane that starts there.

Face plant into hatch, followed by 'fun' little skid along the
bitumen... I think the girl was more traumatised than I was, and
methinks she won't be getting much work done today. Me? I was most
concerned for my lovely Ground Effect jacket, which amazingly survived
with nary a tear. A few grazes and bruises for me, and tore out the
barrel adjuster and cable on the rear shifter... I'll be sore tonight,
but it could've been a lot worse.

Ouch!

Was she cute?

Mozilla Thunderbird might be interesting. I've been using their
Firefox web browser for a while now and it's great.

She was actually!! Or at least, as cute as someone can be when horribly
distressed and a tad freaked out... Must admit, it was a new way to get
a girl's phone number!

Hmm.. anybody ever ended up dating someone they crashed into? An
interesting approach to meeting new people...
