Default Good news for Mason hit by a car

QUOTE:
A young boy hit by a car in a collision that killed his best friend has been named as Mason Deakin.

Mason, 11, and his friend Steven Duffield, 10, were riding their bikes on Anlaby Road on Monday, October 19 at around 6.10pm when they were hit by a blue BMW.

Both boys suffered serious injuries and were rushed to Hull Royal Infirmary where Steven tragically died.

Mason's family say that although his injuries remain serious, he is now in a stable condition.

A huge balloon release to pay tribute to Steven happened in West Park on Tuesday as residents of Anlaby Road revealed their anguish as they witnessed the aftermath of the collision.

Ibraham Omar said: "I saw too many people. I saw people on the floor. Two children.

"It was really sad. I'm crying. I'm not happy. People were shouting. There were children there and young people.

"I'm crying because there was children involved. With children it is too much. I have children too. I couldn't sleep because of what I had seen."

A 30-year-old man arrested at the scene has been released under investigation.

A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "It was reported that at 6.10pm on Monday, a blue BMW had collided with two boys riding a bike. Both boys were taken to hospital where Steven tragically passed away from his injuries.

"“The other boy on the bike, named by his family as 11-year-old Mason Deakin, has been in hospital receiving treatment for his injuries since the incident. Although his injuries remain serious, he is now in a stable condition.”

She added: "A 30-year-old man arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving offences has been released under investigation as we continue our enquiries.

"Steven's family continue to receive support at this difficult time from our specially trained officers and are grateful for all the messages of the love and support pouring in from the public."

Collision investigations continue and Humberside Police are appealing for any information, witnesses, or dashcam footage of the incident, or moments prior.

Anyone who can help has been asked to call 101 quoting log 488 of October 19.
