Need a new Schrader pump head

Welcome back to this exciting thread on Schrader pump heads. After less than 2 years, the $6 head from Planet Bike has stopped gripping the valves, and now I'm ready to up the ante. BC So I ordered the Topeak Twinhead upgrade kit from the LBS. It's a nice package, as Andrew said, with adapters and a hose clamp and a good hose, but the head itself isn't satisfactory. I tried it on 11 Schrader valves. It went easily onto 4, went onto 4 more with difficulty, and would't engage the other three. I chose the Twinhead over the Smarthead because I thought that a dedicated Shraeder fitting would work better than a head that's supposed to fit the narrower Presta valve too. But it didn't. Also, the ergonomics of the head aren't good. The lever is on one side, not always the convenient side, and it was tough to hold the head on the stem and move the lever. It's even more difficult on a flat tire, where you have to push the stem up through the rim, hold the head on the stem, and throw the lever. I will return it and find something else. BC unchucked |
