Default Looks like Rain

Well it looks like rain for my March of Dimes Walk-A-Thon. It will
probably rain for my 25 miles Bike adventure too. (That's usually how
my luck runs)... The problem is......my rain gear consists of AN
UMBRELLA. That's it.

I really don't purposly go outside and walk, ride, or do much of
anything when it is raining. I work in an office, I drive when it's
raining and I usually clean my house if it rains all day. THUS....NOT
ONE PIECE OF RAIN GEAR.

I haven't owned a rain coat since I was in grammar school. I don't even
think I have sensible shoes for the rain. When I walk on the track I
wear my sneakers...BUT I DON'T WALK THE TRACK IN THE RAIN. If it is
raining I go to the gym. Get my drift here, I own absolutely nothing
to stay dry in the rain. NOTHING!

Now if you were me, and you had to walk 10 miles in the rain...then
maybe bike 25 miles in the rain in a few weeks. What would you buy? I
have to buy it today. I am thinking I should buy rain gear that is
suitable for walking and riding.

What is the most important thing to have for the walk this weekend,
which will also be useful if it rains for the bike ride?

I really do not want to spend alot of money on this. But I have to get
something today after work for the walk. I know I should have thought
of this sooner. BUT I DIDN'T!!!!!!!

My main goal is to finish the walk and not end up with pnumonia. Then
use what I bought if it rains for the bike ride.

It's all good,
Maggie.

I went to Kmart and bought one of those three piece rain suits. I can
pretty much do anything in them. Rubber booties would be good also but
I don't think they'll be overly comforable for long walks. Real
bikers, unlike me, just get wet.

Luckily Bike NY, on Sunday, looks just about perfect. Except for that
WSW 9 mph wind. Going to be a lot of folks cursing going up the
Verrazano Bridge at the end of the ride.

What will the temperature be? Will you need warmth or just rain
protection?

I recently got a Sugoi rain jacket made for running that would work for both
walking and biking. The underarms are made of breathable fabric, so you
don't get too hot, but the front, back, and shoulders are rain resistant.
Running stores seem to be putting their rain stuff on about now.

As for shoes, they do make rainproof hiking shoes, which after 25 miles
might seem like heaven. I know Merrill makes some. Or alternately, you
could go with TEVA sandals or the equivalent, so at least if you hit a dry
spell your feet will dry. Wet shoes while walking really does make you
miserable. The rest of you can be wet, but dry feet will make the
difference.

Too late for Saturday though. One thing I know for sure is not to wear
new shoes before a 25 mile walk. Anything that doesn't fit quite right
will make you very unhappy.

I believe it is a 10 mile walk and then a 25 mile ride. But you are
right about wearing untried shoes. It would be better to put some kind
of bootie over them.

Whatever she uses, for both feet and body, it had best be breathable,
or she will do a lot of unwanted sweating.

I bought a fender for the front a few weeks back. It is removable
since I leave it outside in the big city and stuff on bikes tends to
disappear. This way I just take it with me.

If you don't mind the look, this works. Price is right too.

For the walk just any cheap plastic poncho will do. For a 25 mile bike ride, I'd
just go ahead and get wet. If you don't wear glasses grab some cheap safety
googles to keep the spray out of your eyes. Going dead slow, even in bad
weather, neither of those should take you much more than two hours. I keep one
of those fold into itself windbreakers in the car that is handy for moderately
wet conditions. It won't keep you dry, but it gets you wet slower so you have
time to adapt.

Have towels ready in the car, including a hot damp one in a ziplock freezer bag
(microwave it before you go and wrap it in the dry ones Mmmmmm.). and some dry
clean sweat pants and shirt ready to pull on. These can be as fashionable as you
require, but must be warm and fuzzy. Stretching before and after is more
important than usual, the rain sucks warmth and circulation and flexibility out
of the joints and muscles.

You seem to be a girly type girl but not a wimp, you can take it. The important
thing is attitude and outlook, meet adversity with enthusiasm ("Hell yeah, we're
gonna kick this thing's ass") and despair with anger (Like hell this thing's
gonna kick my ass"). Well it works for me whenever a ride starts looking like an
"adventure."

Ron
