Peter Cole writes: This is good news, because it shows that cyclists are finally on the political map. Our presence is finally acknowledged. Knee-jerkism will be shown for the stupidity it is. These Melbournian laws are an ostensible reaction to two pedestrian deaths over the course of about a decade, the last death occured 3 years ago, back in 2006. Meanwhile, lots of people are being run-over by cars. If the Melbourne ridership takes this lying down, they'd just be a bunch of pussies (like LAB.) And I know they're not. Few things are more imposing than a righteously indignant Australian. Righteously indignant Australians are like opening the gates of Hell and letting all the bats out. And Vancouver is still a pretty good place to ride. As a Pacific Rim city and part of the British Commonwealth, we enjoy a long-standing connection with Australia, hailing at least back to the old Empress shipping line. cheers, Tom Cyclists to face big fines or prison under tough new laws http://www.news.com.au/heraldsun/sto...78-661,00.html The maximum penalties under the new act include: DANGEROUS riding - $13,610 or prison for twelve months or both. Was the state highway code so badly written that there were no penalties for this type of thing before? In Ontario a bicycle is a vehicle just as a car is and the same penalties apply. Actually I think this is true in all provinces in Canada. John Kane Kingston ON Canada |
