getting so fat.

Why don't you tell us what you've ever done as well. Are you one of
those degreed engineers I had to fire because you didn't see work as a
obligation of life but as a waste of your precious time?

I'm not going to get into any bragging competitions. I am a degreed
engineer, but not one of those you fired.

To your larger point, I would have done better to have taken my own
advice of just yesterday and said nothing. I have a sister who, after a
brain injury, really would forget that she had breakfast. It wasn't
very funny.

I have known people with similar mental handicaps. I certainly feel
sorry for them.

The real problem is, what is appropriate behavior when a person's mental
handicap caused them to behave in a truly obnoxious manner? It's not a
rare problem.

In real life, one can usually walk away or otherwise arrange to not
listen to the disturbed individual. On a discussion group such as this
one, it's more difficult. Despite best resolutions, it can be difficult
to not respond.

And as Sir Ridesalot has pointed out, even kill files don't help when
someone else responds.

If you don't think it is funny perhaps you should stop acting as if it was.

I had a great deal as a project leader trying to get engineers to stop acting as if they were special and actually complete their jobs. It isn't funny at all that all the investors in a company lost their money because I had to do more than half of the work and couldn't complete the project and get the company on the air. Six engineers and I completed half of the programming and hardware design. That didn't impress me at all with degrees. If I had one more non-degreed engineer that could work like me those investors wouldn't have lost their money.

Yes, but is it good for? what did you actually study? I only ask as for

There is no such institution as the San Francisco Maritime Academy.

There is Cal Maritime aka CSU Maritime Academy which used to be the
California Maritime Academy. There is no navigation degree offered,
perhaps there was one in the past.

Why don't you tell me what you think that a diploma in navigation means? I don't remember getting it but I remember members of the Golden Gate Yacht Club hiring me as Navigator and watch captain for coastal races. If you think that there is no such thing exactly why was that? I remember shooting noon latitudes and coastal points so that I could tell how far offshore I was keeping the boat. A degree in navigation is required for commercial navigators and they are a ship's officer. Perhaps I did that because my Grandfather was chief engineer on power vessels. As I say, I don't remember getting it and I don't feel like digging around in 10 years of files to find it again. I just remember stumbling across it. Should it be important now?

I have two levels of kill file. One is based on the author and deletes the
posts that the “killed” person makes. The other is the scorched earth
version, which searches the entire post and deletes every post in which the
person’s name appears. If you can’t help responding, try the second
version.

Well, a 'diploma' is NOT a 'degree'
IME, you can get 'a diploma' from as little as six months part time study.

You seriously need to put together a 'life book' where you keep all those
certificates and significant photos from your life to remind yourself who
you were. Do it now before the damage/dementia gets worse.

What do you think I just did? I was completely serious.

Whatever. I do my job, the company owns some of my time, not my life.
They'll let me go in a heartbeat if it doesn't look like I'm worth the
expense. If I had wings I could fly around like a bird; those investors
of yours made a gamble that didn't pay off.

OK: Why did you post that?

I suspect it's because you felt you had something significant to
contribute. And for bonus points, you thought I was wrong, and you felt
a need to correct me. So you posted. Right?

But couldn't you have proven your point - "It's easy to not post" - by
simply not posting? Think about that a moment. I'll wait.

.. . . . .

.. . . . .

It doesn't work, right? Here's why:

When dealing with a mentally deficient or otherwise unreasonable person
in real life, there are many silent tools. Eye rolling, steely glares,
slowly shaking one's head and more can all be done in silence. They
often make a person realize he's out of bounds. If those fail, one can
walk away mid-conversation, which does deliver a message.

On this sort of discussion group, those tools are absent. Sudden silence
- IOW, just not posting - conveys nothing. In fact, it probably makes
Tom or Jute think they've just been proven brilliant. Worse, dimwits
reading them may think "Ooh, he must be right!"

It's a problem. At least try to understand that.
