Man held as cyclist left with serious injuries after ‘hit and run’ in Basildon
QUOTE:
A CYCLIST has been left with potentially life-changing injuries after a “hit and run” crash with a motorbike. A police probe has now been launched following the smash, which happened in St Nicholas Road, Basildon, on Sunday evening. Officers were called at about 5.30pm with reports that a motorcycle had collided with a pedestrian at the junction with Leinster Road, as she had been crossing. Police say the motorcyclist then fled the scene. Police teams and paramedics arrived to find a woman, aged in her forties, had suffered serious and potentially life-changing injuries. She was then taken to hospital by air ambulance. A 26-year-old man from Basildon was still being quizzed last night on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and failing to report an accident. Basildon Mayor, David Burton-Sampson, said: “Accidents happen of course but if someone has been involved in such a serious crash and then leaves the victim on the side of the road, it’s absolutely despicable. “I would call on any witnesses who might have seen anything to get in touch with the police so the appropriate person can be brought to justice as quick as possible. “Any information no matter how small could be helpful.” The mayor added: “I’d like to wish the lady involved a very quick recovery in what must be a horrible time for her and her family. “I’m sure they want and need answers for some closure.” A spokesperson from Essex Police said: “Anyone who witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage of the collision, or the moments before it, is asked to please get in contact with our Serious Collision Investigation Unit by emailing “Alternatively you can call 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers completely anonymously. “Please reference 42/122600/20 when reporting any information.” https://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/186...-run-basildon/ |

It is stated that a man was "being quizzed last night", but that is all. |
