Default coaster brake not engaging

Friend of mine asked me what would cause a coaster brake hub to
sometimes skip and require backpedaling a half turn. I think this is
a three speed planetary gear coaster hub. He does not complain about
it skipping when he pedals forward is there an adjustment or
lubrication required?

Thanks in advance

Does this happen in all three gears or just one of the three gears? ISTR my
3-speed coaster brake hub behaving the same way, I had to backpedal a fair
bit when braking in first gear. Unless this is accompanied by strange noises
or reduced braking performance, I wouldn't worry too much.

Do you happen to know who made your friend's 3-speed coaster brake hub?
