Classic English Roadsters in NYC
Hello! I represent an English company that sell classic English
roasters. Our cycles are hand built and are ergonomically designed. This means that they are posture friendly due to the overall frame dynamics being in complete synergy and perfect proportion. They are robust bicycles with 36 spoke wheels. I am interested in your thoughts on our bicycles. We have a huge interest for this type of retro bike in Europe. We believe that this bike is perfect for urban commuting; the optional lap top carrier for the gents in their business suits and also the wicker basket on the ladies model for extra storage when doing your shopping, carrying your gym bag, etc. We are keen to enter the NY market so please let me hear your thoughts and comments on our models and if you can recommend importers/wholesalers/shops. Thanks Ken V E L O R B I S www.velorbis.com |

It's not like we have a lot of hills here, but having a decent low for the ones we have is useful. You could start by contacting Charlie at http://bicyclehabitat.com/ He'll know whether you stand a chance in the NYC market. Don www.donwiss.com/joyrides (e-mail link at page bottom). |

Such a bicycle might generate more interest in areas where it is actually practical to commute short distances. I think it's more of a shopping/errand type bicycle. At 43 pounds, I don't think many people will want to commute more than a few miles on it, no matter how retro-cool it is. It's about the same spec as your average bike that you see in any Swedish city. Although a lot of folks ride hybrids and city-mtbs with fenders, a good part of the market is still heavy utility bikes like this. Heck, I had a couple when I lived there, my favorite being a Kroon. Good stuff. These are for city errands and a half dozen km here or there. In the steep hills of Gothenburg, you walk the bike. Weight is unimportant, but ability to carry a flat of beer is. I don't know if there is a market in the states, though if the quality was decent, I'd gladly pay $500 for a solid retro city scoot. One thing that will discourage folks is a crappy Flash dependent internet site that resizes your browser. You'll want to fix that. It seems to be a staple of the bike industry, this overuse of MM Flash. Giant Bicycles avoids Flash altogether, and it seems that they're doing quite nicely. |

It may have sensed my lack of it and shown me a different page. But yes, resizing the browser window has to go! Don www.donwiss.com (e-mail link at home page bottom). |

It may have sensed my lack of it and shown me a different page. The flash issue was with a FIFA button advertising the World Cup. Could be my browser setup, tbh, though I still think Flash is unnecessary for most sites. I don't mind it used for garnish, but using it instead of a popup when you click "show larger image" only alienates folks that don't have it installed. Granted that's a small percentage of folks, but a lot of them are geeks, and geeks buy bikes with SA gearing. :-P Onto the bike... After d/ling the spec, it's indeed very nice. Fully lugged hi-ten (w00t!, gaspipe), with dynohub, 3sd SA hub, chromed toolbox, and standard 700c wheels sound good to me! I especially like eschewing 28" or roadster rims for a more modern standard. If I'd seen one in my local shop when I was shopping for my current city bike, it would be parked in my hallway instead. Price translates to just shy of $700usd. |

Thanks Ken V E L O R B I S www.velorbis.com Looks good, nice touch with the dynamo, but why would I pick it over a $500 Trek 7300 hybrid? It's true that I don't really need a whole lot of gears but I suspect I can go a lot faster on the hybrid, and I have 15 miiles to go each way. |

Because it's infinitely cooler and more elegant. ;-) It's true that I don't really need a whole lot of gears but I suspect I can go a lot faster on the hybrid, and I have 15 miiles to go each way. Then ride a hybrid. Such roadsters are meant for short hops of 2-10km. I've ridden all kinds of old funky roadsters for transportation, and if they're wrenched properly, the stylishness outweighs any downsides of weight or lack of modernity. |
