I have a bottle here of Staminade Sport Lemon and Lime (bought a couple of weeks ago) and it says 17.5g per serve of carbos, of which 17.5g is glucose. The new green plastic containers of powder, it used to be glucose, but now it's dextrose. I think it's been about 3 or 4 months since the change. I didn't get a reply to my email to them asking them why! |

Home drink/gel recipes??

I've been experimenting with maltodextrin for a while. I mix one cup (250ml) of maltodextrin to a litre of water, add a tiny bit of citric acid to give it a sports drink taste. The amount you mix in looks huge compared to normal sports drinks because your body is able to absorb much more carbo than sugar. Sugar (common table sugar, sucrose) is a type of carbohydrate. Glucose, fructose, lactose, dextrose etc are all also carbohydrates. Before making interesting claims, I suggest you try accuratly describe what you're talking about. I've done a little of the work for you, from dictionary.com : car·bo·hy·drate Any of a group of organic compounds that includes sugars, starches, celluloses, and gums and serves as a major energy source in the diet of animals. These compounds are produced by photosynthetic plants and contain only carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, usually in the ratio 1:2:1. About 2.5 times more). Too much sugar upsets the osmosis in your tummy and so the more you drink the less you absorb. Don't take any sugary stuff with the maltodextrin or you won't absorb much at all. If you want salt then you should consume those endurotabs or whatever they're called. Please provide the supporting evidence for this claim of maltodextrin's magic powers. It differs considerably from my understanding of ingestion and metabolisation of carbohydrates. |

Home drink/gel recipes??
Absent Husband Wrote: snip blah-de-blah-de-blah snip I use &/or endorse this product...... ENERGY DRINK RECIP The following measures are for filling a 650ml bidon: 1/3 Cup Maltodextrine Powder Two tablespoons glucose powder Two tablespoons fructose powder A pinch of table salt (approximately 1/8 teaspoon) Lemon juice or other optional flavoring Mix maltodextrine into 650 ml water, then add sugars, salt an flavoring and shake well. Alternatively, the ingredients other than lemon juice can be combine in a small zipped sandwich bag (in the specified quantities) an carried on a ride until needed to charge a bidon. A separate zipped bag can also be used to hold a few lemon quarters t be squeezed into the bidon. I got this from the AUDAX club newsletter (Autumn 2002 No11) , found a http://www.audax.org.au/checkpoint/cpaut02web.pdf (page 7) HOME-BREW POWER GOOP 7 and 1/3 Tablespoons of Honey 3/4 teaspoons of Blackstrap Molasses 1/10 teaspoons (just shy of 1/8 tsp) of table salt Be sure to mix everything together well, and it should make enough t fill a 5 serving GU flask. This recipe works nicely. You may see some bubbles on the surface o this stuff, but that is just a natural occurrence of the molasses. On thing really nice is that neither honey nor molasses needs to b refrigerated, so you can keep it in your pocket all day, and even us it the following week. I probably wouldn't go much past a week, but it should still be good The nutritional content approximates 25g carbs, 45mg sodium, 35m potassium, with plenty of vitamins and minerals that you wouldn't ge with the store bought stuff. I found a Gu flask at a LBS with Triathlon tendencies -- Bikesoiler |

Home drink/gel recipes??
Thanks Bikesoiler, and everyone else...
I'll give a few of these a whirl, and report on the results. Reminds me of a Simpsons episode a long time ago - "fruity, sweet taste - some monsterism..." I assume things like glucose and fructose powder can be bought at supermarkets, specialist deli's, 'body building' shops, or home-brew stores. But WTF is 'blackstrap molasses'?? Should be fun hunting that down..... Absent Husband (frontier food technologist...) |

You can get glucose from supermarkets, the rest probably from "health" food shops. |
