why increasing strength doesn't (automatically) increase power

Strength (no time component) is not the ultimate goal of a sprinter (or any bike racer). Power is (work over time). A 'watt' is a unit for measuring power. |

Strength (no time component) is not the ultimate goal of a sprinter (or any bike racer). I didn't say that it was. Power is (work over time). A sprinter can win while producing less power over a time period than their opponnent, and the winner may also be able to win even though they aren't producing the maximum power that they can produce. For example, Petacchi comes off Cipo's wheel and goes by him 100 meters before the line and wins. He produced higher power than Cipo during one portion of the sprint, but his average power could be lower than Cipo's. If Petacchi acclerates and comes up alongside Cipo but loses by half a wheel Petacchi did essentially the same thing with respect to power but still lost. And don't forget Zabel who was out in the wind for 100 meters longer than Cipo and only lost by a half a wheel. This is why I say the ultimate goal of a sprinter is to get to the line ahead of their competitors and there are various aspects of ability (very high short term power[Petacchi], moderately high power for a longer period [Zabel], high power for a normal period [Cipo]) that can be trained and used to accomplish this. -WG |
