[...] PS: Hey Jay, for being a light on an otherwise dim newsgroup, here is a gift for you ... "Red Wing" by Slim Whittaker. Yes, you would not think so, but he does it perfectly, yodeling and all. It is less than 2 minutes. I have got 51 versions of this song, so you can trust me on this. You should easily be able to get it via LimeWire (FrostWire is even better in my opinion). Folk song (Jerry Bryant) for Ed to bring back memories of crossing the equator for the first time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb_SJNldlQI&feature=related. P.S. I suspect the tune is of Irish origin like all good folk music. The closest I ever got to the equator in my 4 years in the Navy was Morocco. Sheldon Brown was a strange character to me. I cannot fathom how anyone could concentrate like he did on cycling and all its trivia. Still I must admit he was a valuable resource when you really wanted to know something. I am not a great fan of ballads unless the melody is quite beautiful. Most of them go on way too long because they think they have to tell a complete story. I prefer folk dance music with as little vocals as possible. Have you ever been on the ocean? It is the dullest place in the world. Even a seashore bores me after a few hours. I am a land lubber who loves to hike in the mountains and the deserts of our country. The American Southwest is the land that I love the most. Death Valley National Park is like heaven to me! I have a Telarc version of the Verdi Requiem (Shaw/Atlanta Symphony) where the opening drum strikes practically knock you out of your seat. Telarc's typical sonic showcase -- for better or worse. I know the Verdi Requiem is regarded as a great piece of music, loved by all, etc., but I think it is bloated and a little over the top. Call me crazy. I much prefer the Ein Deutsches Requiem, but then I am almost Lutheran (Episcopalian married to Lutheran), so that figures. -- Jay Beattie. |

I'm guessing the Shaw/Atlanta Berlioz Requiem is your favorite? Gawdamighty, how could I not like it? It's full employment for trumpet players. As Hillary Clinton said, "It takes a village to sing a requiem" -- or maybe a small city. It is the musical version of the economic stimulus package. -- Jay Beattie. |

Here is a good piece of liturgical music on a small scale. Gioacchino Rossini Petite Messe Solennelle pour 4 solistes, chœur, 2 pianos, & harmonium. The Michel Corboz (1989) performance is recommended. -- Michael Press |
