I do find it interesting that you consider it an embarrassment rather than what it really was - a man perfectly suited to a particular kind of racing and that kind of racing short enough that power and not ultimate stamina was the deciding factor. Well, Trevor Bull looked somewhat embarrassed as well he might because he had dominated the pro sprint for some years and was beaten in straight rides IIRC. It was even live on telly - most unusual in those days. UD |

And if Reg was stronger than Trev to begin with he might have kept that advantage. Straight sets certainly suggests that. |

And there's nothing wrong with that either. We're about to start on a new racing year and we're going to see something that I don't think has happened before - Lance Armstrong is coming back seriously with a good team. Has there been any time in the past where ex-champions have tried to make a serious impact again? Yes, and it was always an embarrassment. Michael Jordan un-retired and won 3 more championships. Brett faRve un-retired twice and tomorrow she's playing in the NFC Championship game. (I'm not a fan of diva faRve) Sugar Ray Leonard un-retired to fight Marvin Hagler and won in a split decision. That fight was anything but an embarassment. how about some examples from cycling. I don't care about basketball, football or boxing. |

Van Moorsel, one of the greatest comebacks of all times, Gino Bartali forced retirement, then comes back 10 years later to win the tour. There must be others. Ooh, Longo. OKy, but was Bartali "retired," or just the victim of a career interrupted by the war? -- Ryan Cousineau http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls."
