I gain a certain satisfaction from biking up big hills off road.

I hate going up big hills whether they are on or off road. However I love
getting up to the top and for some reason I tend to seek them out. I have
even been known to turn right around and do the same hill back over again.

That is extreme - seek professional help immediately.

What's wrong with that?

I think he is implying that there are no hills around where I live and to an
extent he is correct.

I know of which you say. I used to live in a place so flat you could
see the horizon in all directions. The best hills in town were burms
left from ancient lakes and rivers, nothing more than 5 or 6 metres.
Now I live surrounded by hills and low mountains, and climbs over 800m
are plentiful and some with very steep gradients.
