Shepherds Bush to New Malden
I'm about to move house & have been looking at the New Malden area. I work in Shepherds Bush & have been trying to find the best route. From looking at a map of cycle routes is looks like it's about 10 miles & the best route would be down to Hammersmith, Barnes, Priory Lane, through Richmond Park and then along the cycle lane parallel to the A3 to Coombe Lane. I was hoping someone can confirm I've got the route & distance more or less right. Also - any suggestions about what to do in the winter when Richmond Pk shuts early? Thanks, Michael |

It's only shut to motor vehicles. You can still cycle (except during a cull). Looking at the TFL map #14, I'd carry round to Kingston Gate, cross Kingston Hill Wolverton Av, Coombe Road, Kenley Road, Mount Pleasant Road. The A3 is horrible to cycle along (even on the cycle path) as the cars fling up loads of small bits of debris which gets in my eyes. You also get to hack down Dark Hill in Richmond Park, which is always nice. |

Thanks, Try the route planner at http://www.cyclemaps.com/index.html You can choose either minor roads or a direct route. I've found it very good and while there are mistakes, if you e-mail them in they appreciate it and get them fixed pronto. Tony |

(You can tell I'm a city cyclist). You confirmed what I suspected about the A3 - I couldn't imagine it would exactly be pleasant to cycle along. Michael PS Tony Raven: Many thanks for the link to Cyclemaps.com it confirmed what I thought about the distance. I tested it against my normal journey to work and the distance was almost spot on. Although the route isn't exactly the one that I normally use, it was still a fairly sensible one. |

We did it a couple of years ago on a tandem, about ten at night. After puffing up a hill near Kingston Gate, we swooped downwards then on the flat, through the mist. This was really wierd, the mist was only about three feet thick, so our heads were out of it, but the wheels invisible. You notice the cold as soon as you enter. The temperatures change regularly inside the park, quite eery. Also came head to head with a huge stag about 2am on downhill trail opposite side from Dark Hill. This sort of thing is best done with lumicycles |
