Another reason to use a bicycle instead.

"One-quarter of all the maize and other grain crops grown in the US
now ends up as biofuel in cars rather than being used to feed people,
according to new analysis which suggests that the biofuel revolution
launched by former President George Bush in 2007 is impacting on world
food supplies.

The 2009 figures from the US Department of Agriculture shows ethanol
production rising to record levels driven by farm subsidies and laws
which require vehicles to use increasing amounts of biofuels..."

More OT crap from Doug. Don't the tags "UK" and "cycling" give some

You may remember that the UK Nu Lab Government were very keen on
Carbon neutral biofuels from crops a year or so ago to reduce CO2
levels in the atmosphere from burning fossil fuels, and were setting
targets for its use, until it pointed out to them that a huge land
area would be required and people would have to starve. Usual lack of
joined up thinking, but then what would you expect from Presidents
Bush and Blair?

Cyclists pedalling hard emit more CO2 than a person at rest, or
sitting in a car!

They don't make it easy to use Ethanol over there. Some states (my
example is North Carolina) require petrol stations to "upgrade" in
order to sell Ethanol...this involves buying special fire
extinguishers etc...many stations don't find this worthwile and simply
stop selling it.

I think the idea is to mix the biofuels with existing petrol
(gasoline) and diesel, rather than selling it as separate type of
fuel. I believe that pure ethanol (alcohol) is used in drag racing in
the US and as a normal vehicle fuel in Brazil. Is is very flammable
and burns with an almost colourless flame, so is considered rather
more dangerous than conventional fuels.

I'm not sure most cars can handle such a mixture.

Indeed, made from sugar cane.

Is is very flammable
and burns with an almost colourless flame, so is considered rather
more dangerous than conventional fuels.

As an aside, my experience with a rented "dual fuel" 2010 Ford Fusion
was that mpg were about 25% less with Ethanol than with petrol, even
after allowing for the (small) difference in price. I've been told
that this is because those Ford engines are optimised to run on petrol
rather than Ethanol.

Well you don't want cars using oil either, so what do you suggest as a
viable alternative fuel?

Note, a different form of transport isn't the answer to the question
