There is a chip shop near us where the drivers *always* park on the
footway to access the shop. How do you think they get there?

Lawfully, unless you are in Greater London.

And unlikely to be at normal travelling speed, I'd wager, or for any great
distance. Probably a few yards at less than walking speed.

The woman sustained a serious head injury and was rushed to

She's lucky she wasn't hit by a driver. Oh hang on, she would have been
hit by a car and it would have had nothing to do with the driver.

One of these illegal parkers will hit a pram pusher one day.
Bound to.

I have heard of claims by cyclists who have mowed down a pedestrian
on the *foot*way to the effect that the victim wasn't looking out
for vehicles on the *foot*way and so was lucky that they weren't
mown down on the *foot*way by a motor vehicle. Presumably, they
meant the non-existent motor-vehicles being driven along the
*foot*way as though they were... er... bicycles.

Most pedestrian casualties on pavements are due to out of control
drivers.

Very probably true. A quick tour through a few of those "crash"
compilations on Youtube soon shows how easily - and spectacularly -
control is lost when someone *else* does something stupid.

But however bad things are in such incidents, imagine how much worse
they could be if people were in the habit of driving motor vehicles
along footways at normal travelling speed. Luckily, it doesn't happen
(as in "I've never seen it and I don't think you have either").

It wouldn't necessarily be worse but it would probably be more
frequent. And I have seen motor vehicles driven along footways not out
of control.

Not for any distance that could be credibly described as a significant
part of a journey and certainly not credibly described with the quite
common behaviour of cyclists.

Oh, so it's not the act but depends on the length of journey. What wriggle.

Driving on a footway for certain purposes is perfectly OK (and FTAOD,
analogous cycling on the footway is equally acceptable).

It is remarkable how when a driver of a motor vehicle is mentioned
as a likely culprit, you get all worked by notions of law and
evidence and yet somehow it never happens when a cyclist is
mentioned. You should try to be consistent.

This was purely a reaction to the predictable wriggling which
invariably includes the string:

"...lucky she wasn't hit by a driver [on the footway]"

The luck is the severity of injuries. Where is your evidence it
happened on the pavement? Do try to be consistent.

...usually as an implied criticism of a pedestrian victim who, when
walking along a *footway*, wasn't keeping a sharp lookout for rapidly
approaching vehicles which shouldn't exist in the same time and exact
space as pedestrians on *footways*.

Usually, huh? If it's so frequent you will be able to supply a quote.

All you have to do is to disassociate yourself from those "She was lucky
I wasn't driving a car" remarks,

It's difficult to disassociate from statistics and impossible to do so
for the laws of physics.

so often used of situations where the
speaker was cycling along a footway, the wrong way along a one-way
street or straight across a pedestrian crossing where the pedestrian had
ROW.

Go on... you can do it...

Oh, you can't provide a quote. Then it doesn't happen.

First rule of road safety. Make it so dangerous and inconvenient that
nobody goes there.

They probably get out and push.
