Over the years I haven't believed a few thing you have written. This
without doubt goes top of that pile.

Why?

Although I'm not good at it, I love climbing. All my leisure rides are
centered around the question, "which climbs do I want to tackle this
time". In fact, the steeper they are, the more I like them. I'm no
masochist though, I have the gears to deal with them.

Well maybe I'm just different. I have always judged my rides (and
commute) not by how far I have to go but by how many climbs I have left.

Of course if I had climbed 250m in 2km I would be very happy once I was
at the top. And would no doubt be replacing my cycling specs with a
suitably rose tinted pair.

Come try the Weavers or Roaches and discover a climb or two...

Yes. No traffic. As it happens, all but three of those who rode today were
under 16, and it's a lot easier to do things with kids on bikes off road.

Needless to say the fastest of the under sixteens made it up in slightly
less than half my time...!

It was, in an odd sort of way.

http://www.stewartry-wheelers.org/wh...ticle_109.html

I went out at half past nine and rode half way up the course to put out the
waymarks, and then dropped down to the bottom again to see who would show
up. In the end it was almost exclusively the kids, and among other things
the person I'd hoped would do 'top timekeeper' hadn't come. So I agreed to
do 'top', as it was a way of avoiding showing off quite how slow I am up
hills. I started up the climb at 10:12, having asked the bottom timekeeper
not to start the kids until 10:20. In the event he held them back until
10:25, for which I'm grateful, because otherwise I wouldn't have had any
time to spare - they might have caught me on the climb. It is brutal; it
doesn't let up. I certainly hadn't been at the top for five minutes when
the first of the kids got up to me. It was cold up on the hill, and the
visibility wasn't great - a bit misty - but dry; and it's just lovely
being out on the bikes. I think everyone was a little disappointed how
short an event a hill-climb is; we may schedule it for December next year.

A fortnight ago we did the run over the Mennock Water, which is about 370
metres in a single climb, but in about six miles. That's tough enough.
Screel Hill's 250 metres in not much more than a mile is severe. I am not
a good climber. I'm too heavy and I'm not strong enough. But I really do
enjoy these rides.

Depends what you enjoy. If you like pushing yourself out of the comfort
zone then hills can be fun. At Glentress I enjoyed the climb up to Spooky
Wood (without resorting to my granny ring) almost as much as the descent
(which is admittedly partly because I'm a big fearty). ;-)
