Not at all. When I came here I was immediately told to back up (almost everything) I said with proof or a cite. I realised that this was a nice orderly group where people expected accuracy. I quickly realised that this only worked one way - and that some people were allowed to say things with arrogance and impunity and be totally unable to back things up. People - but you in particular were quite objectionable - and made derogatory comments some of which were outright lies - others which were issued as a "challenge" eg - here are some of yours: I have never said that I encourage my children to wear helmets. I challenge judith to find the place where I said I encourage my children to wear helmets. You accused me of making snide insinuations about the author of Cyclecraft - yet to be backed up at all So there you go - played at your own game - with your rules. (But you never learn : you're still doing it - "Summer 2007" indeed!!!) -- I encourage my children to wear helmets. (Guy Chapman) Some evidence shows that helmeted cyclists are more likely to hit their heads. (Guy Chapman) I have never said that I encourage my children to wear helmets. (Guy Chapman) - proven to be an outright lie. He then quickly changed his web page - but "forgot" to change the date of last amendment |

happiness is a childback tandem
Hi all again.
Helmets: I won't debate this at all. I have opinions on cycle helmets, which are summarized very neatly in the link that Mike Clark posted. Having come to this opinion through many years of cycling and reading about cycling I am exceptionally unlikely to change it, so there is nothing for me to gain by participating in these debates. But, as Judith says, don't let that stop you from expressing your views! (In particular, it was reading such debates, amongst other things, that brought me around to the opinion I have now.) John Grove: that's an amazing story, all those generations of cyclists! My hubby and I both came from pretty much non-cycling families (well, they can ride bikes, but they almost never do now), but for some reason, both he and I really took to it, especially the cycle commuting aspect of cycling. It was one of the things I liked about him when I first met him! Our kids have been transported in the cycle trailer since they were 2 months old, so maybe we will form the beginnings of a cycling dynasty like yours! To those who posted other photos of multi-person bikes: Triplet! My gosh! Andy Morris, I think your tandem is a bit snazzier than ours. Slick paint job! Also, yours doesn't look like the childback version, so not quite snap... But it really is heatening to hear others' tales of family cycling. -Myra |

How dare you post a reasonable and coherent argument and then refuse to be drawn into the trollfest. You think this newsgroup is going to fill the servers by itself? Shame on you! ) Guy -- May contain traces of irony. Contents liable to settle after posting. http://www.chapmancentral.co.uk 85% of helmet statistics are made up, 69% of them at CHS, Puget Sound |

One thing I should mention is that we got the tandem through the gov't Cycle to Work tax-free bike scheme. Although the bike was alot more expensive than most bikes bought through this scheme (I guess) it's going to be used for exactly the purpose the scheme was set up for: allowing me to continue to cycle despite needing to transport more than one non-cycling kid. Now that is something I should consider. We might be getting a bike to work scheme soon, and Igor the tandem is getting rather long in the tooth for a scrapheap racer. I'd also like something my wife can ride without it breaking under the weight of two fully (over)grown adults. The options I have used for kids before are to have the trailer and a child seat. I have managed three that way. Two is better as they are separated by enough space that they don't fight. ...d |

Are you still going with Summer 2007 - you naughty boy - your nose is beginning to grow again!!!) PS give us another laugh - what does "never" mean? -- 13 August 15:11 I would challenge judith to find the place where I said I encourage my children to wear helmets. In fact, I have several times most explicitly /not/ said that. It is her inference from some pictures, but I have never said that I encourage my children to wear helmets ad have repeatedly pointed out that it is neither relevant (appeal to authority fallacy) nor any of her business. |

(Some advice I should follow too!) |

Mine's a Dawes Toucan and I've posted ride reports in the past. Have removed the Burley piccollo, so it only takes two now. Just don't talk about maximum speeds - but then you live in Cambridge... regards, Daren --- remove outer garment for reply |

Aw, g'wan. (I've a vague recollection of discussion on this matter with you some time back - or are you saying it doesn't go fast enough? :-) ) Reminds me of the tale told to me by the owners of a child trailer. Burley solo, manufacturers max speed 15mph, 5mph round corners. Said owners queried this with the retailer, and were told that apparently 65mph was a bit fast for it and they wouldn't try that one again :-) cheers, clive |
