Is it possible to live in America without an SUV?

You can use what ever criterion you want to, but the only criterion that really matters is if most people think it is good enough to use. Just a bit over 100 years ago, the opinions in the US on this subject were remarkably different from what you correctly posit as the current attitude. Yes, the majority of US residents *today* do not regard a bike as a viable transportation alternative for their current needs, but this has changed before, and may change again. The rate of shift is slow, but at least it is now nonzero, and increasing. Of course, bikes will have to compete with other methods as well, and it's quite likely that there will be more than one alternative to the IC-powered automobile which will eventually take a significant share of the load. No one can predict what the changes will be along the way at this point, though many have speculated about the possible courses. -- Typoes are a feature, not a bug.
