MTB 26" to 700x(something wider than 23)
hi guys,
been having a few dramas with my roadie. theres a few long sweeping bends on my commute and the 700x23's dont seem to be there for me on these corners... /me looks at elbows and knees without skin. been looking at my MTB recently instead of my roady now that the roads are mostly wet =/ (damn, i'm going to need gaurds at this rate) but the though of runing 60 psi on those lumpy 2.125X26" on the road makes me twitch... i'm used to 120 psi damn it! does it make sense to swap over to 700x38(or 45) with a tread likey to throw more water than a slick? (and run at ~100-120 psi) i've swapped over the 700x23 wheels into the MTB frame its a comfortable fit, brake calipers line up nicely, front and rear dropouts same width, etc.. or do i just live with a 10-15 minute longer commute? cheers, kim |

I commute on a hardtail MTB with 1.5" slicks pumped to 100psi. Comfortable,
grippy, efficient. Needs a compressor though. The track pump works OK, but it's too much like hard work. However, I think I need to ditch the suspension forks and go rigid. |

Well, you can run 120 psi on these babies, but don't have a puncture/blowout at anything other than vertical. Actually, the biggest problem I find is that they have to be centred orthe tyre can pop the rim. 700x23's don't seem that big to me. sure, switch over to the MTB, but start with the smaller tyres, then 1.75", then only 2.125" if you need them. that is a lot of extra rubber/nylon/fibre and air you have to rotate, unless you count it as weight training. I ride 2.125 on my MTB/tourer/commuter/everything because our local council has 3" lips in pram crossings[1]. [1] I suppose I should also ask for the best way to get splattered babies off the frame, but I find the coachroaches crawling all over the frame tends to stop people wanting to nick it [2]. [2] okay, okay, thats a poor taste joke. I plead welding fumes from brazing bicycle trailer number 4 tonight. |

Actually, the biggest problem I find is that they have to be centred orthe tyre can pop the rim. i've had a few blowouts on the roadie =0 no fun.. but i've ended up with the original and very old steel rims on the MTB. they are plenty wobbly at the moment and a bit soft. you could say hammered[2]... so i'm looking at new wheels and tyres anyways..cluster busted too =/ its had a hard, hard, dirty, hard life =) 700x23's don't seem that big to me. sure, switch over to the MTB, but start with the smaller tyres, then 1.75", then only 2.125" if you need them. that is a lot of extra rubber/nylon/fibre and air you have to rotate, unless you count it as weight training. been thinking about putting the 700x23 straight on the MTB and just riding it to see if the frame size and setup feel better. been havin back issues recently[1], roadie makes it worse =/ so hoping the old school upright MTB will help. I ride 2.125 on my MTB/tourer/commuter/everything because our local council has 3" lips in pram crossings[1]. i have three sets of double tram/train corssing. had a few pinch flats over those on the roadie, not real happy about, but have a good floor pump now =) looking to MTB for more ruggedness factor [2] okay, okay, thats a poor taste joke. I plead welding fumes from brazing bicycle trailer number 4 tonight. um .. tell me more! =D cheers, kim [1] lifted[6] the vax, vax didn't want to be lifted =( [2] like the times bike met cerb, cerb one. therefore hammered rim[3] [3] but i'm a lot older and alledgedly more sensible now[4] [4] well, at least i think so[5] [5] i did say alledgedly [6] attempted to [7] dangling refernce[8] [8] i didn't sleep much[9] [9] can you tell? |
