Default tyres - brakes

Just put some 2nd tyres on to my mountain bike wheels, but now discovered
they are too wide for the brakes as they are set. Is there a way I
can readjust the brakes so that the wheels can fit in properly?

The brake pads should not be rubbing against the tire (tyre). Did you
unhook the brakes before putting the wheel back on the bike?

On the front wheel I did unhook the brakes. On the back, I just squeezed it
through.

Is it possible to adjust the brakes so that they don't rub against the
wheel, or do I need smaller tires?

Is it rubbing the tire or the rim? It should never rub the tire. If it
is, you can move the pads down onto the rim by loosening the nut on the
pad post.

Yes, rubbing the tires, so I will try to move the pads as suggested.
Thanks.
