Default Rim Recommendation

Just noticed a large crack in my rear wheel. The rim was a Mavic that I
had picked up years ago so decided to use when replacing the previous
rim a couple years ago. Not the best decision. I'd like to reuse the
spokes.

This is a 700C, 32H wheel, with a 9-speed Campy freehub. The ERD
appears to be 612 mm. Any particular suggestions? Looks like the Sun
CR18 would work. My racing days are a fading memory; I'm looking for a
reliable rim. Mavic's are out as they haven't been reliable for me. I
use wired-on wheels and am happy to put on a 28mm if it fits (didn't
work well with the Mavic rim (19mm wide) since it made installing an
inflated tire impractical).

I'd prefer a rim that doesn't have a reputation of making tire mounts
really hard. I've pulled one too many rib muscles struggling with hard
to-mount tires. Dang those heal slowly. Have one right now, but not
from mounting a tire...

Thanks

If the CR18 will work for you, I've been abusing a pair of them for a
couple of years with no issues. I'm probably not the hardest guy on
his equipment, but they are inexpensive and have a good reputation.
Just make sure you can adjust your brakes to fit them.

The combo of folding Paselas (28 or 32mm) and CR18s for me requires
tire spoons to mount, but isn't particularly challenging.

X2. The CR18 is perfect. It's a road rim with 100g more meat than your
average stupid light racing rim, making it not ridiculous for daily
abuse. Takes a good amount of tension, which Mavics don't.

Some tires will be a little tight, though. IME, Some Contis play
poorly with Suns--see if your LBS will let you try to mount a tire
before you buy it. Wider mounts more easily, usually.

Is mounting a tire on a bare rim a reasonable thing to do?
I'm thinking the rim could easily be bent, which the
bike shop might not appreciate.

The CR18 is a good choice for me too.
They have eyelets, and no sockets.
The absence of sockets is made up for,
in my opinion, by the double wall construction;
and that is where the extra weight is.
Highly recommended.

Sigh. I carry a tire jack for this beast.
Use narrow rim tape.

Not recommended by the lone idiot reviewer. Who are these maroons?
The guy can't read, misses that it's silver, and leaves a 3 out of 5
review because it's not black. Sheesh.

I love watching people struggle with tight tyres. Eventually they get
them on, often with the help of a tyre lever, then some have damaged
the tube with the lever, and others forget to push the valve stem
inside the tyre.

Last one I watched did just that - forgot to push the valve stem into
the tyre. As he was reaching 100psi, I noticed the bulge at the valve
and said. "Stop! Quick, let the air out!". Close.

He got it seated, then started pumping again. Up to about 115psi as
he jumped on the floor pump handle (a light 18 year old), and I
clapped and shouted "BANG". Should have seen him jump. Poor lad. I
thought he was going to need to clean up a mess in his pants!

I have been using a CR 18 for 8 years with an Airfree tire and have
had NO problems with it.

Since I don't own a car, I ride almost every day and in all kinds of
weather.

Thanks, but I'd rather suffer the occasional strained rib ligament ...

Maybe I've been lucky, but I don't use levers to mount a tire. That's
not to say that I've never fought with tight tires - tight enough to
relaly hurt my thumbs - the tight ones (i.e. tight tire / rim
combination) are a bitch; you've just got to get them on a *little*
bit at a time (really, the only way anything ever gets done if you
think about it, and a core part of my life philosophy).

I always used levers to start tires *off* of the rim, but it's too
easy to pinch the tube using levers to mount them. You've just got to
keep working both beads down into the low middle of the rim all the
way around to get all the slack you can.

I did a lot of tires in a motorcyle shop - where big levers were
*required* to get tires on; so I do know how to use them for mounting,
and have technique to avoid pinching the tube. It's just not worth it
if it can be done by hand. I guess if I discovered some combination
of tire and rim that I couldn't live without and wouldn't go together
any other way, I'd stick a lever in there if I had to.

The part about gettting the valve stem "flange" between the bead and
rim is a dumb mistake for anyone who's already done it a time or two.
Mounting bicycle tires does not need to become rocket science (or
behavioral psychology :-)
