Well, I suppose there _is_ merit in that, since not using it for cycling, will mean more journeys by motor vehicle, and therefore an increase in the carnage that is known to be caused by that means of transport. |

If the aim was to get people exercising the solution is to make cycling more difficult and encourage walking instead. Walking is a far more effective form of exercise than utility cycling and costs both the exerciser and government far less than using the less effective bicycle would. Throwing a few million into a dustbin is simply a way of silencing some slightly annoying dim critics who live and dine in Islington, who think life ends outside the M25 and cycling (on £5,000 bikes) is pretty neat. 9 years ago a government report showed that the cost of inadequate exercise to the NHS was 8,400,000,000 pounds a year. Which has nothing at all to do with bicycling. We need to bring our annual investment in cycling up to NL levels, Why? |

Is cycling the only known form of exercise? This petty change from the government is (apart from being money we can't afford NOT to spend) ....says... who, precisely? |

That's what you get from a religion. Maybe we should listen, apparently they earn more than the rest of us, and are healthier than the rest of us. Funny, I've never seen a match-fit multi-millionaire footballer turn up for training or go shopping on a bike. The only rich and healthy sports people I've ever seen on bikes are the ones who *have* to ride them. |
