Actually I take about 12 hours to do a century due to stopping and doing
some sightseeing along the way. I'm not trying to be like Lance but I do
enjoy the freedom the bike gives me. Believe what you want, but I live
in the country so I have all kinds of places to explore.
My riding is mostly recreation and I am not hung up on speed, just being
outside in the middle of nature.

Goggles/glasses are good. I use Safety Glasses when it gets real
cold - below freezing. Don't care if I'm fashionable or not - I'm
bike commuting in the cold!

That seems like a good idea since I have worn them over my glasses
when I was doing some electronics at a company where the safety

I've found the cheapo kind don't work for me; they fog up and don't
fit well. I have looked into better goggles and some might work but
they have to fit the balaclava and helmet and it's just too much
hassle. I do NOT want my vision impaired while I'm riding. I ride
because I enjoy it. If it's that much trouble I just take the train.

Milwaukee can get pretty cold. I'm in NYC and I'm usually willing to
commute down to 20F or so. I've done it colder but goggles really are
needed then and I they either fog or block my vision.

It's wind I really hate; my old legs are getting too creaky to deal
with it. That's why I cheated and bought this:

For temps from about 45F down to probably 30F, I'm using bicycle
tights over my padded bike shorts. But, lower than 30F, I just use a
cheapo pair of nylon windbreaker sweatpants (Target - $12 back in
2001, maybe) - that keeps the legs/knees working for me. Below 0F, I
also add a layer of polyester long underwear, too.

That's tough. I'm much wimpier. Mostly I wear black jeans (because I
can also wear them to work). I wear different stuff sort of every 10
degrees. 20-30 is pretty much all my cold weather stuff. 30-40 is
lighter gloves, lighter middle layer. And so on.

I also have Hotronic toe warmers so I can wear regular shoes most of
the cold weather. Now that's ultra wimpy.

I'd say that, for me, probably 80% of the battle in cold-weather
riding is stopping the wind from getting to you. In cold, I wear a
windbreaker jacket ($8 on ebay) and windbreaker sweatpants ($12 at
Target). Under that I wear a long-sleeve poly shirt, cycling shorts
and maybe poly long underwear if it's cold enough) - don't need too
much more than that, really. Once you get going, your body provides
the heat. I have Thinsulate gloves which are fairly wind-resistant,
with an underlayer of Silkskins, in case I have to patch a flat tire
or something. Hiking boots on the feet on the real cold days and a
balaclava on the head/face/neck with safety goggles. Pretty much no
skin exposed once it gets down below 20F. YMMV.

Cold is not an issue - you just have to dress appropriately.

Now, for me, 34F and rainy/windy - that stinks!!! And, I found that I
really, REALLY DO NOT like bicycle commuting in downtown Milwaukee
rush-hour traffic when there's snow/ice/slush on the roads! Not fun.
Those conditions will make me drive the car to work, for sure.
