Default chances by countries

Here is my opinion of riders from their countries who have the best
chance at winning th tour.

Germany: Ullrich, maybe Kloden but I doubt it.
France: Chavanel...and maybe Moncoutie
Belgium: Axel
U.S.A: Armstrong...maybe Leipheimer
Spain: Valverde, followed by Mancebo, and Mayo remains a ?
Australia: Rogers
Russia: Vinokourov..I'll make him Russian to keep it simple,
Karpets an excellent chance too
Switzerland: Cancelara
Italy: Basso
Denmark: Rasmussen
Holland: nobody...I take it back: Boogerd
Portugal: Acevedo
Colombia: Botero

OK ... but you've actually got quite a bunch of folks who have NO chance of
winning the tour unless a rock slide takes a bunch of folks out who are up
the road.

Yes

France: Chavanel...and maybe Moncoutie

No.. Christophe Moreau would be closest, but he's not sharp enough.

Belgium: Axel

No

U.S.A: Armstrong...maybe Leipheimer

Yes

Spain: Valverde, followed by Mancebo, and Mayo remains a ?

No, yes, yes..

Australia: Rogers

Yes, and also Cadel Evans.. and McGee, perhaps?

Russia: Vinokourov..I'll make him Russian to keep it simple,
Karpets an excellent chance too
Switzerland: Cancelara

No, it's not his kind of race. If I had to pick the top Swiss it would
be Alexandre Moos.

Italy: Basso

Maybe. Simoni for polka dots.

Denmark: Rasmussen

He did really, really poorly in the Giro.

Holland: nobody...I take it back: Boogerd

No

Portugal: Acevedo

If you're going to include him, at least include Salvodelli, DeLuca and
Hincappie..

Colombia: Botero

Maybe.

Realistically:

Germany: Ullrich, maybe. Kloden can follow, but not lead
France: No Serious contender for the top 10
Belgium: No Serious contender
USA: Armstrong, Leipheimer
Italy: Basso
Spain: Mancebo, Mayo, Heras
Kazakstan: Vino

If Botero avoids blowing a stage, he's got a chance at a top 5 finish. The
rest are just fighting to make the top 10.

Maybe you could include Cunego. But that's a big maybe, I think. In a
year or so, he should be a more likely prospect (if his current progress
continues the same way).

Spain: Mancebo, Mayo, Heras
Kazakstan: Vino

seems a rhetorical ploy to give Karpets "execellent" winning chances.

If you are going to give Vino to Russia, then I would say Armstrong is
Spain's best chance at the yellow jersey. Might as well give Axel to
Germany too.

There must be at least 10 riders with UCI licenses who haven't been
listed yet...

As an aside, why do people keep mentioning Cadel Evans in contexts such
as this? The guy can't even ride without training wheels and you want
him to win the biggest bike race in the world? Every time the guy gets
on his bike there is a 5% chance he will crash - what are the odds of
him even finishing the Tour? Clearly he has a motor in him, but that's
not enough. This is why Telekom left him home last year - no point in
having him crash the whole team in the TTT.
