I'm not so concerned about the turtles as I am the snakes who like to sun themselves on the trails. I always have visions of these things getting wrapped up in my tires. |

I have been involved in 3 turtle rescues over the past few years. Two horkin'
big snapping turtles and a box turtle. Those snappers are impressive, aren't they? It still amazes me that they live in relatively suburban areas. Joel |

I scoot them across with my foot at the tail end. Usually they will tuck in and glare at you, and let you scoot them across. Snappers of course posture and hiss more than the other kinds. |

First time my former wife saw on crossing a road in south Florida, she thought it was an alien creature. lol I see them a lot along the river trail. Much of the geography lines up like this: | Sports fields/Parkland| |MUP| |shore vegetation| |old man river| For reasons known only to turtles they make a trek from the river to the parkland/sportsfields in rain and at dusk. [someone suggested they might be going to nest and lay eggs] And they are BIG bruisers. I'm guessing they probably mass at ~5 kg. Ornery too. I stopped once and tried nudging one with my shoe and 'he' pivoted with his back foot swung around somehow and latched on with his forleg and bit my shoe! -- elaine: 'It shrinks?!?' george: 'Like a frightened turtle.' |
