It's difficult to get a tough workout on rollers, because there's so
little
tension. The idea to rollers is to perfect your balance and pedaling,
because it's so easy to ride off (crash) them. There are some rollers that
have resistance devices, but yikes, the only thing that keeps you upright
on
rollers is

nope, the kreitler headwind works just fine.
Rollers are much more fun than a dumbed down rear wheel trainer.

My guess is that you're a more-skilled cyclist than most. I spend a lot of
time on rollers back in the day, including doing the really dumb stuff like
reading a magazine (just to show off) etc. But it doesn't take much at all
to mess you up, and when I've ridden on resistance units (including the
Kreitler, which, by the way, is the best), well, it's just not something you
can idly drone along on. Any lapse of concentration and you're gone. That
just isn't an issue with a (admittedly boring) rear-wheel trainer.

I have found that a structured workout on the trainer helps pass the
time without boredom. I have been working with the Trainright climbing
video, and the first 30 minutes or so passes before I have time to
think about it. After that I am too busy wiping sweat, getting a
drink, and trying to recover to get bored.
