Default Uncivilized conditions

I don't know how people like Zoot, Keats and Claire Petersky can put up
with the dark, wet, cold days up here near the north pole.

But after today's ride I decided I can't train properly under these conditions, it
all became very clear when the Barista that I had spent 10 minutes explaining
how to do a correct Ristretto espresso pour just last week went and did another
stalled pull on my Ristretto today!

That's it. I'm heading to Guatemala to train, probably base myself at El Recreo in
the Coban region.

I'll take my Diedrich IR 12K drum roaster, Mazzer Nero stepless micormetrical burr
coffee mill and probably my Pasquini Livia 90 or maybe my La Marzocco
expresso machine. That way I can totally live off the land.

What? Don't you have a pedal-powered grinder for your beans? Is that what
you'll be training on? How else you gonna live totally off the land?

Hey, you could tie that in with a dream date with
Courtenay Love. That'll show Lance. When you come
back, just make sure she carries all the luggage.

cheers,
Tom

Fabrizio, I have noticed a distinct turn in your recent missives towards
obsessing about coffee makers rather than cycling equipment.

Is this your subtle way of saying Saeco has signed you up, or (dare I
even suggest it?) have you started slipping down the gentle slope from
elite euro-pro to, like Udo Bölts, a domestique riding out his contract
and thinking of other things?

Snap out of it, man! The October recovery break has long passed, and it
is time for your initial off-season base conditioning. If you don't get
those miles in today, you'll never make it through the Classics, much
less the Tour de Rêves.

ObReality: after flatting on three consecutive Saturday rides, I went
out to my bike again this morning, and there was another bloody piece of
glass in my front tire, making for five or six flats in three weeks.
This is on fairly new tires!

It's time for a little more imaginary riding.

I choked down some instant coffee with fake creamer and artificial
sweetener before heading out on my ride on my old Schwinn LeTour. My
pants have a hole near the knees where I wiped out after hitting an icy
spot. I don't have proper arm warmers so I put on my blue nylon wind
jacket that I bought on sale at K-Mart last spring. At 20 miles, I
stopped at the 7-11 and stood in line with some chain-smoking riff-raff
to pay for my Snickers bar and a cup of Joe that had a greasy film on
top. I'm at the welfare office now, using their Internet to, umm, job
hunt so I can continue to receive my monthly check before I head to the
homeless shelter where I chain my bike to a tree before turning in for
the night. In the summer, I just leave my bike under the bridge that I
sleep under; the shelter's a hassle but it gets awfully cold at night
in the winter. Do they have good Internet access at the welfare office
in Guatamala? I imagine it's warm enough that they don't need homeless
shelters.

I'm just yanking Fab's chain, just like he's yanking yours. His
fascination with coffee is rather new. Guatamala does seem an unlikely
winter destination for him.

Have you ever heard the Austin Lounge Lizard's cover of "Brain Damage"?
Pink Floyd done to bluegrass; it's a hoot.
