What if Landis is Stripped of the Win?
Hi,
If after the adjudication of the banned substance allegation against Landis has run its course and if it is upheld, how will the winner of the 2006 Tour de France be determined? Will they have to recompute all the times and points awarded throughout the race as if Landis had never participated? Or do they just give the Yellow Jersey to the current number two, Oscar Pereiro, and likewise move everyone up one in the general classification? RandyS |

They could adjust the time bonuses but it probably won't change anything between Pereiro and Kloden. According to http://www.velonews.com/tour2006/results/articles/10554.0.html, 32 seconds separate Kloden from Pereiro. Would individual stage win reassignments only be done for stages that Landis won, or for all of them? Greg RRS |

The real beneficiaries will be the 2nd, 3rd and 4th, since they will see a bigger check. The Tour winner gets 450,000 Euros. If Pereiro and Kloden finished 2-3 behind Floyd on some intermediate sprints, which I don't think they did, and similarly I doubt there were any/many relevant differences at the end of the stages. They will only have to recalculate from stage 17 to the finish. It will be done as if Floyd never started on the stage he was caught doping on. Other than everyone moving up a place there might be an adjustment of the polka dot jersey standings since Landis snagged a bunch of KOM points in the 17th stage. Nice try, but Bzzzt. Wrong. |
