Default 100mm bottom bracket shell? WTF.

At the bottom of this Phil page is a 100mm shell 145mm wide square
taper bottom bracket in stainless steel:
http://philwood.com/store/page30.html
which punches all the buttons I want punched for my new bike:
stainless, 14mm wider overall than the 131mm BB I have now so I won't
need pedal extenders, wider (100mm) shell so my chainstays can be
straight (1).

But, hey, if Phil catalogues it, it's surely a standard item
somewhere. So broaden my horizons. What sort of bike uses a 100mm
bottom shell?

I'm not a know-all. I don't need to be. I know whom to ask.

(1) My stainless bike will be assembled of 14mm steel tube triangles
with the base of each pyramid either on the bottom bracket or the rear
frame end. (Think Pedersen meets Kranich.) I'd like all the tubes
straight. The big difficulty is the chainstay because I'll be using
60x622 tyres and SKS P65 mudguards, which dinna leave any space on a
68/73mm BB shell to attach your actual stainstay without contortions
that weaken it, cost extra, and look ugly.

100mm BB shells are common on Big-Tire (3"+) bikes, like many downhill
bikes, or the 4"-tired Surly Pugsley.

Thanks for answering my What's That For, Hank. I ride only on made
roads, though the surface on some are terrible, so I don't think I
need to go any wider than the widest Big Apples. But that Pugsley is a
very interesting bike indeed. -- AJ
