Default Chain advice for the following setup:

9 speed Ultegra cassette, with
10 speed Ultegra chainrings (changed from 53/39 to 50/34 compact)

I was thinking 10 speed Ultegra/DA chain would be okay. Here is
why... I have another bike with an 8 speed cassette and 9 speed
chainrings and I'm running a 9 speed chain on that (all Shimano) and
that combo works fantastic.

So, I was thinking that 9/10 combo with 10 speed chain would be okay -
but I'm not sure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Either 9 or 10 speed chain will work fine, but 9-speed will be much
less expensive.

shimano '105' level 9s chain. A 10s chain at 5.9mm will not shift well.

9spd is cheaper, more durable, and more appropriate.

Thanks Peter, raam, Hank, and landotter.

Peter,

Did Shimano change the profile of the teeth of their 10 speed
cassettes for the thinner 10 speed chain?

Or, is this simply a matter of spacing?

Okay, I may as well confess... I found a good deal on a 10 speed
Shimano chain for this setup and I purchase it, cut it, and put in on
and I'm really unhappy with the way the chain appears to be meshing
with the 9 speed cassette. It sounds like crap. It shifts okay on
the bike stand, but I'm afraid to take it out and try it under load.
Also, this was a change from 12/23 to 12/27 and I had to adjust the B
tension screw (inward) all the way in order to get the 34/27 combo to
work well. Maybe this is another issue with the chain being too
thin? Not sure yet, but it looks like I'll be getting a new 9 speed
chain. My father in law just got a new 10 speed ultegra equiped Trek,
so it looks like he may be getting a free 10 speed chain.

Thanks again.

can you not see the difference between shimano 9-s & 10-s chains? don't
you think shimano would design their pick-up ramps to mesh with the
appropriate chain?

No they don't, they just make the spacers more wee.

you need to look a little closer. the differences may be small, but
they do affect shifting.

Yea, the chain difference is very obvious. My vote is that things
have changed enough such that Shimano 10sp chains and 9sp cassettes
don't live happily together. At leaste that is what it sounds like
on my 9sp/10sp setup.

Now, my 8sp cassette with 9sp chain and chainrings combo is better
than the original 8/8 setup. So, that is where I was coming from.
Silly me. I should know better than to assume.
