Default Wrong-way driver who killed safety patrol cyclist while on phonejailed

A hit-and-run driver who ran down and killed a cyclist while chatting on
his phone and ignoring one-way signs has been jailed for eight years.

Reuben Richardson, 38, accelerated and carried on driving after striking
51-year-old IT worker Antonio Marchesini, dragging the victim and his
bike along the road before ditching his Mercedes and running away.

Victim: Antonio Marchesini volunteered in orphanages for the Red Cross
and taught foreign languages to disadvantaged teenagers

What is a "safety patrol cyclist"?

The story seems to contain an explanation of sorts, though in the
circumstances, it has to be an "as told to" story by a third party who
knew what the cyclist was doing (and perhaps was doing the same thing).

QUOTE:
Mr Marchesini, an experienced cyclist, was wearing a high-vis jacket and
was patrolling the road to try to prevent accidents when he was killed.

[ ... ]

The crash happened ... as Mr Marchesini carried out a safety patrol on
a new cycle lane, in a road which had become one-way. “Concerned there
might be an accident, he was warning incoming drivers about the change
to a one-way system...”.
ENDQUOTE

Is this "safety patrol" now a thing?

If not, it sounds like it is needed more than ever now.

Are any other sorts of vigilante also required?

I'm sure that you'll be able to get some more gossip on that subject

from other pedantic cycle news hunting old fogies.
Maybe there's a few "Shouting at traffic" clubs or "I hate cyclists"
coffee morning meetings in your area.

Google may help you. Here's but a few links. HTH.

Is pedant an insult?

Pedantic Meaning: Almost Always an Insult
You know the sort: the person who tends to correct small errors other
people make and who pays way too much attention to minor details.

'Pedantic' describes a particular kind of annoying person.

Is that what he was doing, "shouting at the traffic"?

I suppose the sub-text does sort of convey it, but you obviously know
more about it than a casual reader.Perhaps you are involved in the same
thing in order to know so much about it.

Thanks for the information.
