Default Front derailleur.

I have an 8 speed freewheel (and a triple front crank). How crucial is
it to get an 8 speed front derailleur. Would one designed for a 9 or
even 10 speed derailleur work?
Thanks

It depends - 9/10 speed chains are narrower than 7/8 speed chains, so
the plates on the front mech are a bit closer together - this could
result in your 8 speed setup rubbing against the mech.

Who knows, the mech could just possibly enjoy it?

Eh? Can you even get a front derailleur with those sort of numbers.

One for a triple should encompass only three.

The front derailleur only has to be able to accommodate the difference
in radius between the smallest and largest chainring, i.e. the effective
height of the inner and outer plates, in addition to being able to pass
from one extreme to the other and only touching the chain when moving
between chainrings (and nothing else or at other times). But apart from
all that, they are pretty interchangeable :-).
