Now, now "Brian" (may I call you that?) - please don't use such
inappropriate
language.

Still - it is nice to know that I can always bring out the best in you.

Psycholists SOP. When losing an argument, always revert to insults.
Fortunately, the psycholist spared us the foul language this time.

I'll put that right just for you, Catcrap. Go **** yourself.

Lost yet again, briannob 1861?

Pot kettle black.

Your post makes as much sense as any of your others. At least you're
consistent.

That isn't a very good take on my screen name, you know. You certainly
aren't a master of wit and repartee, Catcrap.

His includes quotation marks. Yours STILL fail in this basic test of
readability.

And yours will *always* fail, no matter how many "quotation marks" you deem
fit to include.

That would be my view. Lifting bicycles on top of an MPV is no fun.
Hard to reach the straps, terrible noise and drag, much neater
perched on the towball.

Before the arrival of the motor-car, carriages came equipped with
steps which could be simply deployed by placement next to the carriage
as it was stood stationary (horses bucket on ground). Such steps, or
even a box could also be carried by a motor-car for utilisation in far
off lands (remote places etc).

To be fair, it was still quite difficult to lift the horse onto the
roof with them...

For a tandem, my take on this would be to lift it with an impromptu
crane (rope and pulley), get Bertie's wife to move the motor car
underneath and then lower and guide the tandem onto the rack with only a
minimum of scratching and swearing. For my portable shower, I use handy
tree branches and a ground anchor/ laden bike. But for a tandem, the
distances would have to be doubled and mass at least quadrupled.
Suitable, accessible trees of those dimensions are few and far between
in the Loire Valley, so I would be looking for a quiet bridge or the
local mechanic (most have a building big enough to take a combine
harvester and places to attach the pulley, for obvious reasons) or
jack-of-all-trades with a fork-lift truck...
