In the News: Cycling most risky summer fun
From the article:
-------------------------------------- Cycling injuries put more people in hospital than any other summer activity, says a new study on sports and recreation injuries in Ontario. The study, conducted by the Canadian Institute for Health Information, shows cycling injuries at the top of the list of leisure activities requiring hospitalization with 665 cases from June to August 2002, followed by playgrounds with 285 injuries and all-terrain vehicles at 204. Margaret Keresteci, manager of clinical registries at the institute, said those statistics are consistent with previous studies and it's not surprising that cycling is always number one. ------------------------------------- Read it at http://tinyurl.com/4e26e J. I wonder what they have to say about simply driving a car.

"The study, conducted by the Canadian Institute for Health
Information, shows cycling injuries at the top of the list of leisure activities requiring hospitalization with 665 cases from June to August 2002, followed by playgrounds with 285 injuries and all-terrain vehicles at 204. Margaret Keresteci, manager of clinical registries at the institute, said those statistics are consistent with previous studies and it's not surprising that cycling is always number one. "I would imagine, proportionately, it's probably not out of whack because there's probably a lot more people who cycle (than other activities)," she said. There are at least 2.8 million recreational cyclists in Ontario, according to a report by Statistics Canada looking at helmet use across the province. Playground injuries were highlighted in this year's study, Keresteci said, because children aged 5 to 9 are most likely to be injured on a playground. From 2002-2003, the study showed almost 8,700 children were taken to hospital emergency rooms after being injured at a playground." It's a faulty study, they only sampled injuries from JUNE TO AUGUST. Prime cycling season. Read the numbers. 8,700 children injured from 2002-2003, at the playground, total. But only 285 in their 3 month study, you do the math(avg/month), her numbers don't add up. Just another example of a "doctor" manipulating data to prove a point. |

It probably isn't that much higher or lower than average/other outdoor sports. If you're truly concerned, there are waterproof/resistant sunscreens. Can always reapply when necessary. -- keydates |

Can always reapply when necessary. Sunscreen has never been proven to prevent skin cancer in humans. "It is not known, however, if reduction of exposure to UV radiation through use of sunscreens and/or protective clothing or through limitation of exposure time can reduce the incidence of nonmelanoma skin cancer in humans." http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/p...essional/page3 |
