Man accused of killing cyclist in van collision appears in court

A man accused of killing a cyclist in a fatal crash on the A127 has appeared in court.

Ben Greenslade, of Chadwell Heath, was riding his bike along the busy road in Wickford close to the Dick Turpin pub when he was hit by a van.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on September 2, 2018 but 30-year-old Ben was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers investigating his death have been carrying out extensive enquiries since the day of the fatal crashDavid Hanson, 42 of Seal Road in Sevenoaks, was summonsed to appear at Basildon Magistrates Court on February 27.

He faced charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving while unfit to drive through drugs, drug-driving and failing to give information to identify a driver.

Hanson is next due to appear at Basildon Crown Court on Thursday, March 26

At the time of Ben's death, his family paid tribute to their son and brother, saying: "Words can't describe how much Ben was loved by everyone who knew him."He was thoughtful, sensitive and kind, putting everyone before himself.

"Ben was extremely athletic, loved to cycle and was at his happiest being outdoors. The whole family is heartbroken by what has happened.

“Ben was a wonderful son, a wonderful brother, a wonderful man.�
