That's about the same for any consumer grade bike hub, though, isn't it? Maybe. Down towards the Sora/2200 and basic Formula range, it's easy to pit cones in a year. That said, spend ten bucks to recone them and they're usually good for another ten years. Deore is finer in comparison. As Muzi said. Shot of grease and a readust. Ride. I was under the impression that Shimano cones were replaceable but cups were not, not so? Yes. or do the cones generally wear out before the cups? Yes, for a couple of reasons. The cone surface is more highly curved (and convex, not concave) and stationary in operation. (now you've made me think that I ought to service my rear hub this winter, even though I have not been riding nearly as much as I wanted to - I maybe only have 500 miles on it) The real factor that determines repacking intervals is the amount of rain you ride in and the quality of your seals. Good grease will last a very long time if it doesn't get contaminated with water. My mountain bikes are never ridden in the rain and I never repack them. I use boat trailer bearing grease on my other bikes. |

When the cones have worn to an extent where replacement is necessary (unusual) then the cups should be replaced if long service is required as the original cups will be contaminated with hard debris. If you want a cheap bearing to last, strip it when new and wash out all the machining debris before re-lubricating with fresh, clean lubricant. Any bits left in from the manufacture may cause fatigue to the bearing surfaces and you will get pits. |
