WELL DONE! QUOTE: A Fishponds dad fled after drunkenly crashing his motocross bike under a car. Daniel Newton, of Marshfield Road, could not wrench his bike from underneath the car bumper in Staple Hill – so he ran home. Minutes later, police arrested the 33-year-old. He admitted five offences today (November 24) at Bristol Magistrates’ Court. The crash happened on Seymour Road, at around 7.30am on May 31. Prosecutor Alexis Brown said: “The witness was at home when he heard a loud crash in the street outside and saw a motorcycle had gone under the rear of his car. “He went outside and saw a yellow and black motocross bike lodged under the rear bumper of his parked car. “The defendant appeared to be trying to pull the motorcycle from under the car. “He asked the witness for help to remove the bike, but the witness refused and called police. “The witness said the vehicle was damaged afterwards.” A neighbour described being woken by a crashing sound. She said Newton seemed “more concerned for the motorbike than anything else”. “After failing to remove the bike, he ran off,” Ms Brown continued. “A third witness noticed the defendant walking out in the road in front of her while she cycled. She said he seemed a bit dazed. “As she cycled up to the scene of the collision, the neighbours explained what had happened. “The woman cycled back to where she had seen the dazed male, followed him and watched him go into a property. “When police arrived minutes later, the cyclist was able to point out the property he had gone into.” Police entered the home and noticed Newton had “gravel rash” injuries. Daniel Newton leaving Bristol Magistrates' Court They found his behaviour to be “erratic”, with glazed eyes, slurred speech and an unfocused gaze. Newton failed a breath test, giving a reading of 50mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The limit is 35mcg. He only had a provisional licence for the off-road bike. Victoria Ellis, defending, said: “When police attended within minutes, Mr Newton fully accepted he had been the driver and involved in the collision. “He explained he had been drinking heavily the night before. He had purchased the bike in question as an off-road bike, and had always intended to use it in legal circumstances. “He and his partner had an argument, she left the property and he made the foolish decision to ride off on his bike.” She added her client “panicked” when he ran away because he knew he should not have been riding. Newton had to be treated at Southmead Hospital for injuries from the crash. He admitted drink-driving without insurance or a full licence, and failing to stop or report an accident. “He had been rendering and plastering, but because of coronavirus, in March he was sent home and had three months where he started drinking quite heavily,” Ms Ellis said. “He tells me with some pride that this incident was a wake-up call and he has not misused alcohol since. “He’s had a couple of pints on two occasions since May.” Ms Ellis said Newton has a 10-year-old daughter and he takes home about £300 a week. Newton has four previous convictions for 13 offences. Presiding Justice Mrs Jackson ordered Newton to pay a £300 fine, £34 victim surcharge and £85 in prosecution costs. She banned him from driving for 16 months. https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/b...-drink-4732408 QUOTE: Newton ... only had a provisional licence for the off-road bike ...he knew he should not have been riding.
