Three quarters of motorists don't think cyclists should pay roadtax
most motorists appear to have the common sense to realise that
discouraging cycling will only make life worse for them only 25% are too stupid to see the obvious http://uk.autoblog.com/2011/11/21/a-...-pay-road-tax/ "Where to start? Motorists don't pay road tax - they pay car tax. Roads are paid for from general and local taxation, so everyone pays. Vehicle Excise Duty, which I assume is what they mean, is emissions based, so cycles would be zero rated if they were included. Most adult cyclists are motorists too, so they do pay VED for a car they're not driving when they cycle. Motorists kill hundreds of cyclists a year; the reverse is almost unheard of. And, at worst, cyclists delay motorists from joining the back of the next jam (that the cyclist shortened by not driving). Consfused? I'll say they are." |

I was saddened to be reminded that 'Most adult cyclists are motorists too'. Install brain? Motorists don't pay road tax - they pay car tax. You can own as many cars as you like, you only pay Road Tax if you want to use them on the Road. Roads are paid for from general and local taxation, so everyone pays. And where does the money come from? Motorists. Wriggle all you like, but motorists pay a specific EXTRA tax to use a car on the Road. Vehicle Excise Duty, which I assume is what they mean, is emissions based, so cycles would be zero rated if they were included. VED is a simple name change so the Guvmint can fleece motorists by claiming to be 'green'. Most adult cyclists are motorists too, so they do pay VED for a car they're not driving when they cycle. Road tax applies to each vehicle, not the driver. Motorists kill hundreds of cyclists a year; the reverse is almost unheard of. 115 cyclists were killed in 2008. 33,000,000 motorists doing 12,000 mile per year. 1 fatality in 3,443,478,261 miles driven. Most caused by bicyclists insisting on the use of a non viable form of transport. And, at worst, cyclists delay motorists from joining the back of the next jam (that the cyclist shortened by not driving). If we got rid of bicyclist lanes, bus lanes & all the other nonsense cars would flow more freely. -- Dave - Cyclists VOR. That is what "SORN" are for. it is not an emission duty, only vehicles since 2001 pay more for more emissions. older vehicles can have horrific levels of emissions and pay the same duty as a less polluting car. |

"Road tax" was abolished way back in 1937. It takes *time* for it to sink in that it is VED now and "not road tax" anymore. -- Simon Mason |

Anyone who is actually interested will read what confused.com said. http://www.confused.com/press/releas...wheel-tantrums they will then see that it is road.cc who are spouting the ********. They have criticised things in the press release which weren't actually said. Road tax - yawn. Perhaps they had seen the term on the DfT website. Ask any driver (who is not a rabid psycholist) if they pay road tax - I doubt if any will say "no, I pay excise duty" or whatever the ****wit's preferred term is. |
