81 year old mown down on Pelican crossing by cyclist

The incident occurred at about 6.40pm yesterday (18th March) on a pelican
crossing on the A56 Manchester Road, Broadheath in Altrincham, next to the
junction of Devonshire Street.

A 22-year-old cyclist collided with an 81-year-old pedestrian, with the
latter sustaining a serious head injury.

He was treated at the scene by a passing doctor before being transferred to
Salford Royal Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Just goes to show that cyclists need to take extra care when there are
pedestrians who might step into the road.

It is surprising the number of pedestrians who don’t look when they
cross the road. Instead they rely on their ears and will not hear a
cyclist approaching so just step in front of them. Happens to me all the
time. In fact it happened to me today, she was looking at the car coming
the other way and just stepped off the kerb. Luckily I anticipated this
and just rode round the back of her. It gave her a bit of a fright though.

Hope the poor chap gets better soon.

Either party could have been able to avoid this from happening. The sad
thing is that neither of them did.

You’d be surprised at the number of drivers who sail through pedestrian
crossings expecting pedestrians to be out of the way. Especially if the
lights are green but I have also seen it happen on red too.

The fact is, you really do not know if this was a simple act of
carelessness or an aggressive selfish and arrogant act on part of the
cyclist. The thing is, drivers behave like this with regularity but
pedestrians (usually) get out of the way. But when a cyclist does it it
becomes and awful thing for him to do. I am not trying to justify, just
sayin’, that’s all.

And yes the old fella can be forgiven, same if it were a child, drunk,
idiot etc etc etc.

standard excuse for motorists), or mechanical failure.

Yes, of course; the victim could (and clearly, in your opinion,
*should*) have stayed at home and not strayed out onto a pelicon
crossing so as to annoy the cyclist who let's face it, only wanted to

I know. I was right behind you when you saw it. Drivers ignore red
traffic lights all the time, unlike cyclists, who never break the law.
