This is the beauty of a newgroup like this. The whole week nobody has even
mentioned who was leading or who finally WON the race. On the other hand we
know about Odessa, her dog and who sucks ass in Discovery...

Why should anyone give a flying **** about him. The peleton screwed up
big time and let a 2nd rater get away too far to make up. It wasn't
that he won the race, but he did a nice job hanging on by his
fingernails for the win, but he's a nobody. His win was a complete
fluke, he should retire now because it's never going to get any better
for him.

You're underestimating Walkowiak, like almost everybody. He was an excellent
climber and not so bad in the TT either. In 1955 he finsihed second the
Dauphiné Libéré, after having made Bobet suffer in the climb to Laffrey. And
he really deserved to win the Tour of '56.

He took 10th last year in the Dauphine. Sorry, it's not a fluke. But
you're right, this is as good as it's going to get for him unless his
team steps up. In fact, he was the only Euskaltel rider who finished
the Dauphine. That is unacceptable, period.

It may be a fluke. But not the 15 minute type of fluke. He just had 2 min.32
advantage after the MtVentoux stage and with two VERY tough stages to come
(and no team to speak of).

Before his fluke
1 Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) T-Mobile Team 4.07.23
(44.14 km/h)
2 Jose Gomez Marchante (Spa) Saunier Duval-Prodir 0.06
3 Wim Van Huffel (Bel) Davitamon-Lotto 0.16
4 Lance Armstrong (USA) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 0.37
5 Floyd Landis (USA) Phonak Hearing Systems 0.41
6 Andrey Kashechkin (Kaz) Credit Agricole 0.43
7 Levi Leipheimer (USA) Gerolsteiner 0.46
8 Inigo Landaluze (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi 1.31

This was the situation after his "fluke" (and before the two queen stages of
the race)

1 Inigo Landaluze (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi 20.41.15
2 Axel Merckx (Bel) Davitamon-Lotto 2.32
3 Levi Leipheimer (USA) Gerolsteiner 2.51
4 Lance Armstrong (USA) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 3.12
5 Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) T-Mobile Team 3.17
6 Floyd Landis (USA) Phonak Hearing Systems 3.38

And this is the end :

1 Inigo Landaluze (Spa) Euskaltel-Euskadi 28.24.46
2 Santiago Botero (Col) Phonak Hearing Systems 0.11
3 Levi Leipheimer (USA) Gerolsteiner 0.38
4 Lance Armstrong (USA) Discovery Channel Pro Cycling Team 0.59
5 Alexandre Vinokourov (Kaz) T-Mobile Team 1.02
6 David Moncoutie (Fra) Cofidis, Le Credit Par Telephone 1.56
....
11 Floyd Landis (USA) Phonak Hearing Systems 7.51

And speaking about career prospects...

Levy Leipheimer(31) has an extensive palmares with the following prestigious
wins, that put him in this group's list of perennial favorites to win the
TdF.

2004
1er de la 4eme etape du Semaine Catalane (Palau Solita I Plegamans - Port
del comte)
2002
1er du classement général du Route du Sud (Classement Général)
1er de la 3eme etape du Route du Sud (Plateau de Beille)
2001
1er de la 6eme etape du Redlands Bicycle Classic (Arrowhead Sunset Road
Race, Redlands - Redlands)

BTW:

Walkowiak had at least 13 victories. He was much less hype than Levy, Tyler,
Floyd and the the discovery crowd....
