Default Zabriskie abandons

Bob Roll is kind of blaming team CSC for abandoning him
in the TTT ("bleeding on the side of the road, in the yellow
jersey"). He said psychologically, it was a mental blow that
took a physical toll. I have no idea if this is the case. Thoughts?

I
wasn't aware DZ was the team leader/contender for GC.

I disagree--the team goal was clearly to protect the GC standing of Ivan
Basso, as it should have been.

What I question is letting him start the next stage and continuing the Tour.
It was obvious to anyone watching that that was a pretty damaging
crash--maybe there were no obvious broken bones, but the internal damage is
still there. What's the point of having one of your young talents beat
himself up like that?

So much talk about a guy who got lucky with the winds on the first
day.

He'll live.

Bob Roll gets paid to say all sorts of stupid bull****. Ain't America
wonderful?

You must be a real pussy if you think riders should quit after they get a
little road rash. Also, the TTT was just the first crash Dave Z had last
week, and unfortunately Riis broke his crystal ball so couldn't predict
the other crash. But let's play your game anyway and ask what was the
point of having Basso continue the Giro after he got sick? Or having
Tyler Hamilton continue the Giro in '02 or the Tour in '03 after his
crashes which were far more serious than Dave Z's? Don't try to give me
any crap about how it's ok to be a pussy if you're not the team leader --
the team is there to win the race they can't afford to have any pussies
on the team.

A decision must be made quickly one way or the other, which is
much better than hesitation, which happened in the past on CSC
and lost Jalabert the Yellow jersey. Recently, it was Phonak
which took over the job of losing lots of time by changing
their mind about waiting for someone.

I'm always amazed when I see riders jump back on their bikes after a
hard crash and chase to get back in the bunch... when I've crashed in
crits, I usually quit.

But this is the Tour! This is a major defining moment in Zab's career,
and it speaks volumes about his character and spirit. His physical
injuries were not serious (as far as I know), and if he'd gotten
himself together and rode well for the rest of the race... maybe even
won another stage... I'd predict a bright future for him. Instead he
let it beat him.

"Z" quit. He can forget about trying out for middle linebacker for the
Chicago Bears. I've ridden with many that have crashed for the first time,
had a little road rash, and quit riding. When asked why, they say like, "I
didn't know that could happen, I don't need that."

Still bitter about quitting, eh?

That wasn't Tyler, but his twin.
