Default Cyclist Killed At Elephant & Castle

Unfortunately I witnessed the aftermath of this - and it was horrific. The driver of the tip-up truck was arrested for dangerous driving. The bike was well mangled.

It happened in the middle of the road complex well outside any blue bike lane.

However there is an issue which has yet to be remarked upon by the press.

When I sadly walked away from the scene I saw another heavy duty lorry - a cement mixer - being driven by a young guy I guess in his twenties. He was obviously NOT aware of his total surroundings due to having those ubiquitous ear-buds plugged into his head from an iPod / MP3 player (or whatever).

It is this aspect which to my mind is one of the problems with heavy lorries being driven without due care and attention by young and older drivers. These drivers are listening to stuff on their iPads / MP3 players whilst driving the lorries in heavy traffic and are not fully aware of what is going on around them.

Are you saying that there was a bike lane, and the cyclist was not using it?

If someone on a bike undertakes or does something equally silly (and
they often wear headphones) it is quite possible for even the most
careful driver to run them over, it is impossible to look everywhere at
the same time. Cyclists need to take responsibility for their own
safety by NOT indulging in risky manouevres.

Are you saying it was his own silly fault?

I agree, if they removed their headphones, the drivers of 30-ton diesel
trucks would surely hear a cyclist trying to undertake them.

I think perhaps you are confused or making it up, the lorry at the
elephant and castle crash does not appear to be a tipper.

As he apparently witnessed the aftermath of the incident, how reliable would
his evidence likely to be considered if he can't even get the type of lorry
right?

It is odd, if so, why not invent the whole scenario, not refer to a non
involved vehicle at an actual crash, it really is quite sick, why aren't
his thoughts with the cyclist's family at this difficult time?

I take it that you would agree that cyclists should not use mp3 players
then.
