Default Waste of public money.

Friday afternoon we drove from Strood to Gravesend along the A226. A
round rip of 15 km. The A226 is blighted by cycle lanes in both directions.

Cycle lanes cost on average £23k per kilometer, so over £380,000 of
public money has been wasted on the requirements of a tiny insignificant
minority using a non viable form of transport.

How many cyclists (or sponging freeloaders) did we see using this
grossly expensive facility?

Two.

A national scandal.

Mine is a very viable means of transport for many things.

I'd have though the A226 was already blighted by Strood and Gravesend in
both directions.

The Department for Transport has a budget for "sustainable transport" and
there may have been another project for which the relevant LA could only get
funding if a certain amount was set aside to paint pictures of bicycles.

It's as bad round here. The council was given £2.5M. The idea was to ruin
err... make safe a "dangerous roundabout" where narrowing the approach
roads, building central islands and reducing from 60 to 40 was the
significant part of the scheme. The lost road width turned into a shared
pavement to much additional expense and fanfare but nobody uses it because
there is a more pleasant route that already existed.

Since motorists pay £4 billion a year in taxes, it's a drop in the ocean.
