One way streets

What conflicting information will pedestrians receive apart from a sign at one end saying something to the effect of "No Entry, except bicycles"? Use a bit of imagination. Imagine, for example, being a passenger in a car, being driven the long way round because it's a one-way-street, being dropped off at a shop, and then later leaving the shop to cross the road, a road in which all the traffic appears to be travelling in one direction, and in which all the parked cars are parked in one direction. Except on the side where the contraflow traffic is passing. Such a person will receive very little if any information about the possibility of near-silent and less visible traffic coming from the opposite direction. Except the contraflow will be marked on the surface, and if there's no contraflow traffic approaching then there's nothing to be concerned about. This is just an example, but the point is that road users will receive ambiguous, contradictory or a lack of information about the direction of traffic. Road users don't just receive information through road signs, by the way. Indeed they don't which is why the vast majority of people go around with their eyes and ears open and brains engaged and thus don't need to be nannied. People are not as dumb as you seem to think they are. |

McKenzie" wrote this:- "no entry except cyclists" is still an illegal sign combination in this country. In this country the City of Edinburgh Council obtained confirmation that such a combination is legal, before putting up many in the past decade or so. Other countries may vary. -- David Hansen, Edinburgh I will *always* explain revoked encryption keys, unless RIP prevents me http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts2000/00023--e.htm#54 |

What's new is trying to do it without the engineering and sign misuse that is needed to get around the fact that "no entry except cyclists" is still an illegal sign combination in this country. Colin McKenzie And your evidence for this being illegal is what please? (uk.legal added) -- Latest DfT Figures: Passenger casualty rates by mode Per billion passenger kilometers: Killed or seriously injured: Pedal Cyclists : 527 Pedestrians 371 All casualties: Pedal Cyclists : 3494 Pedestrians : 1631 Which is more dangerous? |
