According to the free arsewipe this evening, Chelsington will be
trialling an "except cyclists" exemption to be signed under No Entry
and One Way signs, as a pilot for allowing cyclists to ride against
the flow in one-way streets.

And are they going to post warning signs all along the affected roads
so that motorists don't get caught out by this? Sounds like a really
dumb idea to me.

I don't know. The Swedes said switching to driving on the right was a
dumb idea but it seems to have worked for them. Maybe it's stupid,
maybe it's clever. We'll have to wait and see, I guess - which is
kind of implied by the fact that it's referred to as a trial.

That's not something you'll easily forget about - every other vehicle
will (hopefully) be doing it too.

Is it going to apply to all one way streets, or just those that are
deemed suitable? I just foresee it causing all sorts of problems as
motorists will have another excuse to resent cyclists and cyclists will
have so many more tales of idiot motorists to tell.

One would hope that there would be some signage to warn drivers that there
may be cyclists approaching them. Will they, for example, paint a cycle lane
for that contra-flowing cycle traffic (as has been done for years and years
and years along Downing Street in Cambridge)?

What about pedestrians crossing the road? Another huge issue is what happens
at the other end of the one-way street, if there is a set of traffic lights
there. Obviously, there won't be an extra set directly controlling exit for
traffic going the wrong way down a one-way street.

OTOH, perhaps the whole thing is being over-egged by the press and the
council isn't going to post these signs in one-way streets that start (and
would end) at a set of lights. But that would still lead to potential
confusion for cyclists (who are bound to be politically unable to tell the
difference between OW streets with a "wrong way" permission and those
without) and for pedestrians who would be left guessing whether a OW street
really was one way (to the extent that it would make a difference).

They're just going to put up "except cycles" signs on some no-entry
signs.

Been doing that for years in other places, but apparently it's not
strictly pukka for some obscure legal reason unless you build some kind
of pointless farcility waste of concrete feeder lane entrance thing for
cyclists (which they do in some places).

The news story now is that the Government have officially said you don't
need anything except the "except cycles" sign, or are expected to say
that or something.

Saw a premature adopter around our way last week. He was riding the
wrong way on the South Circular while using a mobile phone. Naturally,
he was wearing a helmet. Not a teenager, by the way.

As a pedestrian, I always remember to look both ways, especially on a
one-way street.

What side do you ride up the wrong way of a one way street?
