Another touring question - California?
One idea I've had is to
fly into Sacramento (I have relatives there I could visit for a day) then I have friends to visit in San Luis Obisbo. I wouldn't want to ride ALL the way down. I'm not that strong right now. But maybe if there were good routes I could just see what I could do, maybe take Amtrak during parts where I needed help. I don't know, just something I'm kicking around. A couple of thoughts: 1) Get to Paso Robles via train, then ride on into SLO. I would suggest via Hwy 46, Old Creek Road (takes you Cayucos on the coast), then via Hwy 1 into SLO. 2) More Miles: Use trains to get to the Caltrain station @ Blossom Hill near San Jose. Ride into Hollister the first day, then ride to King City the next via Hwy 25 & G13, then onto Paso the next via Hwy 198, Peach Tree Rd, and Indian Valley Rd. You might see 10 cars in a days riding once you get off Hwy 198. However, you will be very remote, so be properly prepared. 3) Want to see the Delta? Ride out of Sac to Tracy where you can pick up the ACE train to San Jose. Lots of options. I second the suggestion of the Krebs maps. Anyway, it might actually happen and your idea (and the idea of "Top
Counsel" in my other thread) is actually looking like the best idea. I have relatives in Sacramento and friends in SLO to visit. So I could do something like fly into Sacrament.. Get my bike put together... If you do go to Sacramento, don't forget that Davis (bicycle Mecca) is only about 12-13 miles west on Highway 80. Best "bike" town around. Most bikes and bike shops per capita anywhere! Great place to get anything you need for your machine. Also, the Davis "Double Century" departs from there, and up to Clear Lake and back to Davis every spring, so if you wanted to take all or part of that circuit, you can get the route there. The Davis Bike Club runs the thing: http://www.davisbikeclub.org/ If you are shy of hills, use caution in considering the ride up to Clear Lake, though. As to the coast, you may still be able to find the easy-to-use "flip-segment" map that was originally issued as the "Pacific Coast Bicentennial Bike Route," which was of course originally from about 1976 but was updated afterwards also. |
