This is the method I use too. It's not difficult to tell if the tire is
sound or not. My wife doesn't even bother looking at them. She just
tells me it's about time she had new tires. Then I replace them whether
they need it or not.

This long time cyclist just picked up 5 house brand Nashbar Primas for
$20. *grin* Just a heads up. They're fine tires, a bit better than the
basic offerings from Hutchinson and Continental in my experience.

Replace as needed.
