Default Wirral’s top cop endorses campaign for cyclists to wear head gear

A WIRRAL charity has joined forces with police to urge cyclists to wear
approved helmets.

‘Headway’ aimes to raise awareness of all aspects of brain injury and reduce
incidents of acquired brain injury across the borough.

The campaign, led jointly by Phil Barr, Development Officer for Headway, and
Wirral’s Area Commander Chief Superintendent John Martin, aims to encourage
all cyclists to wear approved helmets when riding.

Mr Barr said: “People often spend hundreds of pounds on bicycles for
themselves or their children.

“All I ask is that for a few extra pounds you buy a cycling helmet to go
with it. It could save a life or prevent a brain injury that could be
devastating, not only to the individual, but for the family as a whole

“If you have a relative or friend who rides a bike without a helmet then
encourage them to get one or, better still, buy them one for their
birthday!”

Mr Martin, a keen cyclist himself added: “I fully endorse what Headway
Wirral is trying to achieve. This campaign fully reflects the Force’s goal,
and that of the Collision Reduction Partnership of reducing serious
accidents on the road and to make Wirral a safer place to live and work.”

Headway Wirral, has expanded its service in Laird Street, Birkenhead, and in
addition to opening on Thursdays will provide a drop in centre for people
with Acquired Brain Injury and their families and carers on each Tuesday
between 10 am and 2pm.

QUOTE:
This Saturday evening sees Red Bull Hill Chasers return to Bristol
following its successful debut last year, pitting pairs of riders from
different disciplines against each other to find out which bike and
type of riding is best for going uphill and the flag carriers for
road cycling this year is Ted King of Liquigas-Cannondale, one of the
pro pelotons quirkier characters. What's more, anyone can enter, with
a an open qualification session on Saturday morning.

Kings musings on his blog sometimes irreverent, often insightful,
always worth reading have won him something of a cult following
among fans, with his I am not Ted King t-shirts, frame stickers and
even a pint glass helping raise money for charity.

Hell be joined on Saturday at the event, which starts on Park Street
at 7pm, by 15 national and international pros from four other
disciplines fixed, BMX, cyclocross and mountain bike.

The remainder of the 32-strong field will be made up of riders
selected through a qualifying session in the morning, held between
8.30am and 11am on Saturday morning on neighbouring Hill Street.
Entries for that are being accepted on the Red Bull Hill Chasers web
page.

Competition in the evening session will see the 32 finalists whittled
down to just two who will fight it out for the top prize of a Charge
Gold frame, with a Silver frame on offer for the runner-up and you
guessed it a Bronze one for the rider finishing in third place.

Going by the video of last years event, won by Chris Metcalfe, back
to defend his title, there will also be a big crowd out to cheer them
on.

Doing hill climbs is like shooting yourself in the head with a
revolver.
It's all over and done with quickly :-)
